Oh China, you tease us with much love and KIRFness , except this time it’s actually a real phone — or is it? Even the tipster of this Motorola XT502 says it’s a bit “shanzhai,” but at least we know it really exists . Leaving that thought aside, this Android 2.1 phone rocks some mid-range features: 3.2-inch screen (no word on display type), trackball, touch function keys, physical call buttons, micro-USB port, microSD expansion, 1,230mAh battery, and five-megapixel camera with button and LED flash.

Ever since Apple decided to do little about the iPhone 4’s pronounced reception issues except suggest that users hold the thing differently and / or buy a nice case , the voodoo engineering remedies have been flying in full force — sure, we’ll admit we tried sticking some tape over the side of our phone (no dice), but we stopped short when people suggested we try a couple coats of nail polish (insanity). Even we have limits, after all. But the latest snake oil fix is definitely the craziest we’ve heard so far: according to a 13-page (and growing) thread at MacRumors , the iPhone 4’s reception issue can be fixed by adjusting or even trimming the micro SIM so the contacts don’t touch the metal tray

Does adjusting or trimming the iPhone 4’s micro SIM fix the antenna issue? Probably not.

AMOLED displays in phones haven’t necessarily lived up to their promise; they’d been billed as the be-all, end-all answer for clarity, vibrance, and low power consumption, but in reality, the latest and greatest LCDs look just as good, offer similar viewing angles, have little to no impact on battery life, and fare far better in direct sunlight. We’ve been able to confirm this evening that HTC will be adding an additional supplier of displays later this year — Sony — which will be delivering its Super TFT LCD tech as a mobile exclusive (initially, at least) to key HTC handsets, some of which are already in the marketplace. Specifically, Samsung’s had a devil of a time keeping up with deliveries of its 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display, which means that the Desire , Droid Incredible , and Nexus One could all theoretically be impacted — but because this is a problem of the demand for displays outstripping supply (or at least the supply that Samsung is letting HTC buy), at least some of the affected phones will likely be offered both in AMOLED and SLCD varieties.

It was inevitable, really, that a phone as widely leaked as the Droid 2 would end up caught on video.

The Australian government just found the infrastructure for its A$43 billion national broadband project and eliminated its largest competitor in one fell swoop — pending shareholder and regulator approval, Telstra will receive A$11 billion of that money in exchange for its entire landline network. Telstra will decommission its monopoly of copper cables to make room for the government’s fiber and migrate its customers to the resulting 100Mbps National Broadband Network (NBN) as those light-bearing threads roll out. While Telstra might become a smaller player in the internet and cable business without a land network of its own, it may get even larger in the wireless space — the company says it’s received “written confirmation from the Prime Minister” that it can bid on a chunk of precious LTE spectrum should the deal go through

We’ve already gotten a pretty good look at both the Droid 2 and Droid X and some of their purported specs, and it looks like we can now fill in a few more gaps thanks to a set of leaked slides for some new Droid commercials. The most interesting of the lot is the slide / script for a Droid 2 commercial pictured above, which not only confirms an expectedly sci-fi-themed ad for the phone ( Gattaca -esque, to be specific), but Exchange support and a 1GHz processor (not 750MHz, as previously rumored ). There’s comparatively fewer details in the pair of Droid X commercials, but they do offer yet more confirmation of a 4.3-inch screen, and our first indication of a new EyeCon app that will apparently come pre-loaded on the phone and let you access and control media on your home network — the script for the ad actually mentions a “720 dpi” screen, but we’re going to chalk that up to adspeak rather than Motospeak.

We don’t know what shenanigans are going on over in Vodafone HQ, but the UK carrier gave the world a quick glimpse of its iPhone 4 pricing today, before promptly removing the data sheets from the ether. Thankfully, a fast-witted reader by the name of Liam Gladdy captured the incriminating data for us, and we can now sit and ruminate on what Voda has in store. As you might surmise from above, the vast majority of users won’t be getting the handset for free, though that doesn’t necessarily preclude the contracts from representing good value.
