WASHINGTON – A healthy economy needs bustling Main Streets and a thriving middle class even more than a healthy stock market, President Barack Obama said as he reaffirmed his commitment to work hard for America’s hardworking men and women.
In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama on Saturday outlined what he’s done to help the middle class, a group he says has been squeezed the most during the recession.

(AP) JAKARTA, Indonesia – Indonesia’s smoking toddler has kicked the habit. Footage of 2-year-old Aldi Rizal — who smoked up to two packs a day — puffing away circulated the Internet in May and sparked an international outcry. His parents said he’d throw tantrums every time they tried to stop him from lighting up.
Psychologist Seto Mulyadi, who took the child into his own home as part of rehabilitation efforts, said Friday the boy has stopped asking for cigarettes.
He said Aldi picked up the habit because virtually every man in his fishing village in South Sumatra province smokes.

The National Rifle Association is out with a new ad featuring a doughy, redneck stereotype named Randy, a geriatric “Blue Cougar” or “Blougar” named Louise, and most importantly, action movie star and pop culture legend Chuck Norris.
In the ad, Randy, the group leader, delivers a moving presentation to a congregation of like-minded, denim-loving individuals who seem to embody the “you’ll take my guns from my cold, dead hands” mentality.
After “grandma” Louise gives a particularly fiery explanation of what she’d do to someone who’s trying to come take away her gun, the fun stops.

Michael Douglas went on Letterman Tuesday and talked about the recent news that he has throat cancer.
He has just completed his first of eight weeks of radiation and chemotherapy, and appeared a little thinner than usual, with his suit slightly oversize. With the coming weeks of treatment, he said, his voice may change and it could become impossible to swallow solid food.
But he was upbeat, saying that despite his throat cancer being Stage 4, it has not spread down below his throat. Asked by Letterman what the percentages were, Douglas said he has an 80% chance of recovery, with some hospitals even more optimistic.

Peter McFarland of Marin County, Calif. is suing the county sheriff’s office for tasing him in his own home while his wife pleaded with them to stop.
The deputies arrived June 29 of last year after McFarland fell outside his home while he and his wife Pearl were returning from a charity fundraiser, and he said something to the effect that if he had a gun, he’d shoot himself in the head.
It was hyperbole, McFarland told the deputies, who arrived after paramedics had already helped him inside. A rare survivor of pancreatic cancer, he considers himself lucky to be alive.
