Peter Orszag To Write New York Times Column

Former director of the Office of Management and Budget Peter Orszag will join the New York Times as a columnist, the newspaper announced Friday.

Orszag, who left the Obama administration this summer, will write one to two columns per month on economic and domestic issues for the paper.

“We welcome Peter Orszag’s expertise and insight to our Op-Ed lineup,” editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal said in the announcement. “As a Washington insider and one of the most recognizable names in economics, his writing will provide a unique perspective on the national landscape.”

Safest Driving Cities In America: Allstate Finds Fort Collins, Colo. Least Accident-Prone

Allstate has determined that Fort Collins, Colorado is the safest driving city in America based on the frequency of auto collisions according to the company’s claims data.

Allstate determined that drivers in Fort Collins likely to get in accidents once every 14.5 years, making the city’s accident likelihood roughly 31% lower than the national average.

Washington D.C. and Baltimore were determined to be the most accident-prone out of the 193 cities studied.

Democrats’ Generic Ballot Poll Numbers Drop

Two national polls released today and over the weekend report very different results leading to very different conclusions:

On Friday, under the headline “Democrats May Not Be Headed for Midterm Bloodbath,” Newsweek reported results from a new national poll of registered voters showing Americans evenly split (45% to 45%) on the question of whether they would vote for the Democratic or Republican candidate for Congress in their district.

This afternoon, Gallup released another national survey of registered voters, also conducted last week, showing Republicans with an “unprecedented 10-point lead” (51% to 41%), the largest Republican advantage Gallup has measured in its nearly sixty years of tracking the so-called “generic ballot.”
