Agent Oversight Continues To Vex College Sports

Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops suggests giving amnesty to college athletes who expose shady agents. A Florida sports agent wants national oversight of his beleaguered industry. The NCAA says it’s working on the problem – but it could take a while.

With another season of college football set to begin on Thursday, attention now turns squarely to the playing field. Yet continuing NCAA inquiries into possible improper contact between athletes and agents at Alabama, North Carolina and other high-profile programs guarantee the issue won’t go away quietly.

U.S. State Department Uses Twitter To Get North Korea’s Attention

While most other American officials struggle to substantially advance diplomatic relations with North Korea, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley has decided to take a slightly different approach to cracking the North Korean nut: Twitter. Must-Read Los Angeles Books: Written By Angelenos About Los Angeles

Every month, Los Angeles Magazine releases their recommendations of the best books written by Angelenos or about Los Angeles. This month’s picks have a back-to-school seriousness about them, ranging from Euna Lee’s account of her imprisonment in North Korea to the recession’s impact on the middle class (including our own Arianna Huffington’s Third World America) to theories on the existence of God. Of course, for more light-hearted fare, there are books cashing in on the current vampire trend (set in Los Angeles, of course), a book on deal-breaking dating offenses, and an insider account of The Brady Bunch show.

Caption text by Wendy Witherspoon. For the rest of the list and more of the Best of Los Angeles, check out the Los Angeles Magazine.

North Carolina Farm Produces Largest Cut Emerald Ever Found In North America

RALEIGH, N.C. — An emerald so large it’s being compared with the crown jewels of Russian empress Catherine the Great was pulled from a pit near corn rows at a North Carolina farm.

The nearly 65-carat emerald its finders are marketing by the name Carolina Emperor was pulled from a farm once so well known among treasure hunters that the owners charged $3 a day to shovel for small samples of the green stones. After the gem was cut and re-cut, the finished product was about one-fifth the weight of the original find, making it slightly larger than a U.S. quarter and about as heavy as a AA battery.
