Peter Orszag To Write New York Times Column

Former director of the Office of Management and Budget Peter Orszag will join the New York Times as a columnist, the newspaper announced Friday.

Orszag, who left the Obama administration this summer, will write one to two columns per month on economic and domestic issues for the paper.

“We welcome Peter Orszag’s expertise and insight to our Op-Ed lineup,” editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal said in the announcement. “As a Washington insider and one of the most recognizable names in economics, his writing will provide a unique perspective on the national landscape.”

Megabanks Will Shrink, Bernanke Tells Financial Crisis Commission, Yet Doubts Over Too Big To Fail Remain

In one of his most definitive statements on the subject to date, the nation’s central banker said Thursday that he expects some of the nation’s megabanks to start getting smaller.

“The most important lesson of this crisis is we have to end Too Big To Fail,” Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke testified before the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission. “My projection is that, even without direct intervention by the government, that over time we’re going to see some breakups and some reduction in size and complexity of some of these firms as they respond to the incentives created by market pressures, and regulatory pressures as well.”

Throughout the legislative slog toward financial reform, Bernanke — like the Obama administration — resisted congressional efforts to break up the handful of too-big-to-fail firms that dominate the financial system. In May, however, a third of the Senate voted to effectively bust up the biggest of those giant financial institutions.

Fox News Military Analyst Comes Out As Birther

August’s slow-news period would have seemed to me to be a prime period for some sort of Birther flare-up, but just past the deadline comes the news that Lieutenant General Thomas McInerney has signed an affidavit in support of Lt. Col. Terry Lakin.

Lakin — a Birther cause-celebre — is facing a court martial after refusing to report for deployment to Afghanistan because he doesn’t believe President Barack Obama is eligible to be President of the United States.

It’s one of the more unfortunate instances of Birther Kool-Aid overdose. And now, McInerney has jumped aboard. Dave Weigel reports that McInerney is — or at least was — “a serious person”: “He’s a West Point graduate who ran the Alaskan air command during the Exxon Valdez disaster.”

Joe Biden: ‘Our National Security Is Dependent On The Economy’

(AP) WASHINGTON – Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday he’s confident the various factions in Iraq will form a workable coalition and bring stability to the country, now that the U.S. combat role there has ended.

Interviewed on network news shows from Iraq, Biden said the Obama administration owes it to America’s troops to “make sure transition works.” He said he wouldn’t want to have to explain to parents that the battle wasn’t worth it.

Answering a question, he said it was appropriate — and necessary — for President Barack Obama to also address the economy in his speech to the nation Tuesday night.

Obama Economic Team Weighing New Wave Of Tax Cuts, Infrastructure Spending: WSJ

The Obama administration is considering a range of new measures to boost economic growth, including tax cuts and a new nationwide infrastructure program, according to people familiar with the discussions.

On the list of possible actions: additional tax cuts for small businesses beyond those included in a $30 billion small-business lending bill before the Senate. It’s not clear what those tax breaks would target or how much they might cost in lost revenue to the government.

Health Care Reform Hypocrisy: States Suing Government Willing To Claim Subsidies From Law

WASHINGTON — Some states suing to toss out President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul law are also lining up to claim a share of its subsidies for the medical costs of retired employees.

An administration official said Tuesday seven states suing the federal government are among 16 already approved for subsidies to help with the health care costs of early retirees. The seven are Arizona, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska and Nevada. The official spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of Tuesday’s official announcement.

Voters Leaning Republican On Economy, Terrorism, Other Hot Button Issues (POLL)

WASHINGTON — Americans with the strongest opinions about the country’s most divisive issues are largely unhappy with how President Barack Obama is handling them, an ominous sign for Democrats hoping to retain control of Congress in the fall elections.

In nine of 15 issues examined in an Associated Press-GfK Poll this month, more Americans who expressed intense interest in a problem voiced strong opposition to Obama’s work on it, including the economy, unemployment, federal deficits and terrorism. They were about evenly split over the president’s efforts on five issues and strongly approved of his direction on just one: U.S. relationships with other countries.
