iPhone 4G Knocks, Are We Ready?

iPhone 4G Knocks, Are We Ready? is a post from: ProPakistani

This is a Guest Post by Zaib Ali

Black and white iPhone 4 iPhone 4G Knocks, Are We Ready?

Finally Apple announced its best iPhone ever i.e the iPhone 4 at WWDC10. It may not be a surprise for you to know that apple has already beaten Microsoft in terms of revenue, quite recently, as most of its products hitting the market these days are phone based.

Anyways coming back to iPhone 4, it is a huge phone that ideally speaking, all of us would love to get hold of instantly but the point is, will we be able to utilize the device fully since Pakistan has still not embraced 3G Technology.

While many countries around the world have either adopted the technology or they are in the process of doing so including Bangladesh (surprising, isn’t it!).

Now look at features of new iPhone 4 and then I will let you know its troubling features for us

  • Glass front and back
  • 5 megapixel camera with LED flash
  • 720p HD video recording
  • 960 x 640 resolution with 800:1 contrast ratio (4 times better than the previous iPhones)
  • Gyroscope (3-axis)
  • Gyro + accelerometer provide 6-axis motion sensing
  • Rotation about gravity
  • Apple A4 chip
  • 32 GB of Storage
  • Dual mic suppression
  • 802.11n WiFi
  • 300 hours of standby battery time (3G talk time: 7 hours, 3G web browsing: 6 hours, WiFi browsing: 10 hours, Video playback: 10 hours, Music playback: 40 hours)
  • 3.5-inch screen
  • 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS
  • 3.5 inch mm headset jack
  • Front facing cam for video conferencing
  • Micro SIM tray

The last two features in the above list of specs are the ones that are not supported in Pakistan although video conferencing or front facing cameras have been part of the devices that are running in the country for years but the other problem is a more serious one as Micro Sim tray needs a micro SIM to be inserted in it and micro SIM is something totally new for people and technology in Pakistan.

Tiny card that holds your contact info and account information that you find in your GSM handset is a 15 x 25 mm plastic card whereas the new Micro SIM (also known as a 3FF SIM) is a diminutive 12 x 15mm, about 52% smaller.

This will be a litmus test for telecom operators to come up to the challenge of iPhone 4.

Telecom operators will have to invest in this technology. They should give a solution to this problem as iPhone is one of the most popular phones in Pakistan and iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3GS are glaring examples in this regard

Or if you are extremely eager to have this phone and think that your carrier is not going to provide you with a micro SIM card then here’s what you can do, you can make one for yourself by cutting the large one to fit in your iPhone 4!! (Pakistanis you know are very witty).

Sim cut iPhone 4G Knocks, Are We Ready?

On other hands, people of the country are already voicing that why cellular companies are not bringing in iPhone officially. Else these phones are sold at 3 times’ price in the market.

Retailers in Pakistan are estimating Rs. 70,000 as opening price of iPhone 4G in Pakistan or even higher. So the point is why cellular companies are not thinking about giving out iPhone like they do in other countries.

An iPhone enthusiast went emotional and tweeted following:

Pakistani Politics Hits Twitter

Pakistani Politics Hits Twitter is a post from: ProPakistani

Tendency of following the trend is what we are witnessing these days, as politicians are embracing Twitter, a micro-blogging network.

Good thing is that this way Politicians are in access of a common person, which is otherwise impossible to think about. But bad thing is that Twitter is taken as a vehicle for propaganda than a means of sustained and meaningful engagement with voters or the general public.

We have seen Salman Taseer pulling legs of Punjab Government on Twitter as well, which many think is part of his job assigned by Federal Government. We could have expected the same in return but luckily Rana Sana Ullah isn’t on Twitter yet. Some fear that Rana Sb would be learning Twitter to come out of den, very soon.

Shabaz Sharif hasn’t teased the Governor through Tweets, as of now, but we don’t know about the future as political temperature may rise in the vicinity.

Other politicians include Imran Khan and Mushaid Hussain Syed, who are going pretty smooth with their tweets. Lately, Mushaid Hussain has started interacting with his followers, in nice manner – good approach.

Marvi Memon has been on Twitter for long with her activism from Karachi to Hunza. She is following pretty much number of people and interacts with them as well.

Fatima Bhutto is on Twitter with 8,500 followers, highest in local race.

The renowned Rehman Malik tweets in his traditional way. His tweets actually sound exactly like his voice and accent as he speaks on TV. A pretty similar charter to what we are familiar with.

Not to forget that politicians are facing barriers while embarrassing technology – that’s okay as far as they are tying. But often they are given tough time when they are countered by tech gurus.
