BOSTON — White Sox slugger Manny Ramirez took the blame Friday for his rocky departure from Boston and said he would have joined the Red Sox if they had claimed him when he was placed on waivers this month.

Ramirez was back in Boston for the first time since the Los Angeles Dodgers handed him over to Chicago on Tuesday in a waiver deal. But the opener of the weekend series at Fenway Park was postponed because of the threat of severe weather from Hurricane Earl and will be made up in a day-night doubleheader Saturday.

99er Goes To Washington: Unemployed Activist Lobbies In Person For More Benefits

Connie Kaplan took a bus from New York City to Washington, D.C. to do some grassroots lobbying for extra weeks of jobless aid. Kaplan is a “99er” — a person who has exhausted all available weeks of unemployment benefits and still hasn’t found a job — and she wants politicians to acknowledge that the million-plus people in her situation need help.

On Tuesday, Kaplan delivered a letter supporting a bill to provide 20 additional weeks of jobless aid for people living in states with unemployment above 7.5 percent. She brought three copies: one for the White House, one each for the Republican and Democratic national committees.

“It shows my concerted effort,” said Kaplan, 52, of her Washington visit. “I want them to know I hand-delivered these letters.”

Obama To Address AFL-CIO On Labor Day

Hoping to bolster the spirits of this political base and make a late-stage to working voters, President Barack Obama will address a major gathering of union workers in Wisconsin on Labor Day.

The president will be speaking before a picnic organized by the AFL-CIO in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the White House confirmed. He will be joined at the event by the union federation’s president Richard Trumka.

This will be the second appearance the president has made before the Afl-CIO in as many months. Earlier in the year, Obama addressed the union group’s executive council, appealing to the members for their help and commitment as the election approached.

Back in late July, after a summer of struggle, the underwater oil spill caused by the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig was finally capped. And then, something wonderful and miraculous happened! All of the millions of gallons of oil that poured into the Gulf of Mexico just disappeared! Raptured up into Oil Heaven, even!

Except: not. After absorbing the first spate of media gushing about the wonderful disappearance of all the oil, Mother Jones reporter Mac McClelland sent out a couple of text messages to contacts in the area, asking if they could find any oil, and the response she got back was, “Yes, the oil, it is everywhere.”

But that’s not stopped the administration from taking the line that the oil’s disappearance is unalloyed good news, and that it’s safe for the bon temps to roulez once more.
